Nielsen usability heuristics, applied to your interface

We apply Nielsen usability heuristics to interfaces and prototypes for product and UX teams. You get findings ranked by severity and design recommendations in priority order, with user research and accessibility checks scoped alongside the inspection.

01Overview

Ten usability heuristics and their evaluation method

Nielsen usability heuristics are ten rules of thumb for interface design. Jakob Nielsen refined the set in 1994 after earlier evaluation work with Rolf Molich. A heuristic evaluation is a usability inspection of agreed tasks. We collect independent findings and consolidate them within a UX audit.

02Capabilities

The ten heuristics in interface decisions

The task gives each heuristic its context: an appropriate control or message depends on what the person needs to do next.

  • Status

Can people tell what is happening?

Visibility of system status: a ninety-second bulk import needs progress feedback so people know it is running before they click again and create duplicates. Help users recognize, diagnose and recover from errors: an error message that explains what happened and the next step, beyond a bare code. Help and documentation: contextual guidance at the task, alongside a sixty-page reference PDF.

  • Control

    Can people act without fear?

User control and freedom: back steps in a five-step wizard and undo for a destructive action. Error prevention: choosing between free text and a picker, and placing Delete away from the primary action in healthcare and financial products. Flexibility and efficiency of use: shortcuts, bulk actions and saved filters for dispatchers working through repeated tasks across an eight-hour day.

  • Language

Does the product speak their language?

Match between the system and the real world: use shipment when that is the business term, rather than a database label such as entity type. Consistency and standards: give the same action a consistent label across Save, Apply and Submit controls. Recognition rather than recall: keep a reference number visible between screens. Aesthetic and minimalist design: establish a hierarchy for a dashboard with forty metrics, so the number guiding a decision is clear.

03Fit

Choose inspection, user research or accessibility evaluation

A heuristic evaluation supports decisions about interface usability. We match the method to the evidence your decision needs.

Six situations, and which instrument answers each one
Your situationWhat we recommend
You want to locate likely usability issues in an existing interface Inspect the interfaceWe inspect agreed tasks against the ten heuristics and document findings in a scoped UX audit.
You need to agree which usability findings to address first Prioritize the findingsWe consolidate the findings, rate severity and explain the recommended changes and their order.
You need to understand how users interpret your domain Research with usersWe combine user research and usability testing to understand how people interpret the domain and attempt real tasks.
You need quantitative evidence of which design performs better Measure the designsWe agree what performance means, then compare the designs through measurement and validation. Inspection helps identify issues to investigate.
You need accessibility conformance for a contract or an audit Evaluate against WCAGWe scope an evaluation against WCAG 2.2 criteria, full pages and complete processes at the required level. A heuristic review does not establish conformance.
The redesign is already approved and the budget is committed Review the new workWe inspect the prototype or new implementation within product design, so recommendations inform the work as it develops.

Scope

We group findings by their underlying causes so the recommendation plan addresses the design decisions behind individual issues. Structural changes can become design system work. Our UX audit of a school-meal catering app combined user testing, interviews and Nielsen heuristics in usability reports and presentation decks. unicrew has delivered software since 2012 and has 100+ senior in-house engineers across six countries. Our information-security management system is ISO 27001:2022 certified. Where agreed in the design scope, we build to WCAG 2.2 AA.

04Stack

Inspect prototypes and implemented components

Figma, Storybook and Material UI provide different surfaces for inspection, from prototypes to implemented components.

05Questions

Questions about heuristic evaluation

Choose the evaluation around the question you need to answer, including what can be judged in a prototype and what needs evidence from users.

No. A heuristic evaluation uses expert judgment to inspect an interface against usability principles. Usability testing observes people attempting real tasks.

We choose and combine methods around the product question. Inspection identifies likely issues; user research adds evidence about the people using the product and their context.

Nielsen Norman Group recommends three to five evaluators. They inspect independently before consolidating their findings.

A single evaluator can still produce useful findings. We agree the number and experience of evaluators against the interface, domain and review scope.

Yes. The principles apply to mobile and AI interfaces as well as desktop software.

A model streaming for twenty seconds still needs visible progress. An incorrect generated answer needs an understandable recovery path. We inspect the interaction in its context and use user research to investigate questions the inspection raises.

Yes. We can inspect a prototype against the heuristics before implementation.

A prototype review can address the flows and states it represents. Real data, latency and error conditions also need review in the built product, so we agree which questions each stage can answer.

We quote a heuristic review against its agreed scope and deliverables.

  • Time and materials is billed hourly and quoted per project.
  • Fixed price is outcome based and quoted per project.
  • Team extension is billed monthly per team member.

We agree which tasks and screens to inspect and how findings will be delivered.

Most engagements start within two to four weeks.
