Jack Cooper: Software for automotive

A sophisticated vehicle inspection tool for one of the biggest transportation providers.

unicrew designed and built a centralized vehicle inspection platform for Jack Cooper, one of the biggest US providers of logistics and transportation services, pairing a cross-platform iOS and Android app for field inspectors with a customizable web platform, so the company could run paperless car inspections and manage every operational and work process inside one system.

Outcome at a glance

What this project delivered.

  • 01Paperless inspections submitted from the field, next to the vehicle
  • 02One database behind the mobile app and the web platform
  • 03Photos and damage marks attached to the inspection record itself
  • 04Inspections, assignments and reviews managed from one control panel

Project overview

A deeply customizable software solution built to streamline the vehicle inspection experience and bring all operational and work processes into a single system.

Jack Cooper is well known as one of the most powerful US providers of logistics and transportation services. Its range of offerings is extensive and applies to many areas of the automotive industry, and its Vehicle Inspection service is the one our team was proud to design and build.

Vehicle Conditions Reports are very valuable for car remarketing. They help buyers and sellers make decisions based on consistent, detailed, and accurate information produced by Jack Cooper.

Jack Cooper has managed inventory and inspections on well over 9 million vehicles for many OEMs, car rental companies, lending institutions, dealerships, and auctions. Its clients include giants such as Ford and General Motors.

Challenge

With rapidly growing market share in the vehicle inspection industry, Jack Cooper reached a point where its established methods and approaches were no longer effective for the increasing number of orders. The company needed an efficient software solution to automate the vast majority of manual operations.

  • The technical difficulties were connected with adding new clients into their operation databases and then serving them, a process that could sometimes last up to two years.
  • Processing all the data while inspecting a vehicle was demanding, because each car brand has its own set of requirements and specifications, so the system had to be easy to manage and scale as the industry evolves.
  • The system also had to be user-friendly and mobile, since specialists performing inspections need mobility and accessibility to do their work in the field.

Solution

After a thorough analysis of our client’s business case, our team decided to move forward with a well-integrated, centralized platform that would streamline all operational and in-the-field processes under a single umbrella.

We started with a project kick-off to define everything needed before the first sprint. Development was based on the analysis of the client’s business needs and internal operations, and the aim was to deliver a solution that provides speedy, high-quality vehicle inspection services in the field. Flexibility was needed to adjust the system for specific client requirements, such as adding new car characteristics for a new customer, and it had to stay mobile and user-friendly so inspectors could work on site. Over the following months of active development, our team designed, developed, and delivered two major components.

Cross-platform mobile application

Available on both iOS and Android, the app lets inspectors run a fully paperless vehicle inspection and submit the records to internal systems while standing next to the vehicle. Using it, inspectors and their managers can:

  • Submit and review assigned inspections
  • Perform inspections in real time
  • Submit arrival records
  • Take and attach photos to individual inspections
  • Push the data to the server over the air
  • Interactively mark damages on vehicle diagrams, plus many other features

Highly customizable web platform

The web platform centralized all data flows in one database and handled seamless integration and synchronization between the mobile application and other internal systems. In it, we implemented:

  • A secure administration panel for quick system adjustments and reporting
  • A control panel for staff members to easily manage inspections, assignments, reviews, and other operational processes
  • A customer’s profile used for vehicle inspection overview and export of inspection results
  • A provider’s profile that lets inspectors review, perform, and edit inspections using the web interface

Results

As an outcome of our engagement, we built and delivered a fully synchronized and mobile-friendly system that allowed Jack Cooper to lift their customer experience to another level and manage the car inspection process in a seamless, smart manner. The inspection now happens where the vehicle is, and the record of it lands in the same database the web platform reads.

The Service Intelligence vehicle-maintenance app is the closest neighbour to this one, and our client reviews page carries what clients say in their own words.

The questions behind the project

What did unicrew build for Jack Cooper?

A centralized vehicle inspection platform in two parts. The cross-platform mobile app, on iOS and Android, lets field inspectors run a fully paperless inspection next to the vehicle: submit and review assigned inspections, submit arrival records, take and attach photos, mark damages interactively on vehicle diagrams and push data to the server over the air. The web platform centralizes all data flows in one database and syncs with the mobile app and Jack Cooper's other internal systems.

Which technologies does this case study name, and why did it have to be mobile?

ASP.NET, JavaScript and Xamarin, with the app built cross-platform so it runs on both iOS and Android. Mobility was a requirement from the start rather than a preference: inspectors do their work in the field, standing at the vehicle, so the system had to be usable and user-friendly there. The web platform behind it carries a secure administration panel for quick system adjustments and reporting, a control panel for staff to manage inspections, assignments and reviews, and separate customer and provider profiles.

How did you handle each car brand's inspection requirements?

By building the system so it can be adjusted per client. Each car brand carries its own set of requirements and specifications, so the system had to be easy to manage and scale as the industry evolves. unicrew started with a project kick-off to define everything needed before the first sprint, then built in the flexibility to adjust the system for a specific client's requirements, such as adding new car characteristics for a new customer.

What automotive and logistics experience does the team bring?

unicrew works across automotive and logistics software. What the engineers carry between engagements is the domain knowledge rather than the product: how vehicle condition data gets captured away from a desk, how per-brand and per-customer variation is handled without the system becoming unmanageable, and what it takes to keep a field app and the web platform behind it in sync.
