Engineering experience behind the recommendation

Our advice draws on planning and delivering business systems, including the cloud architecture and operating costs that follow a technical choice.

  • Cloud planning with financial reasoningFor Booked It we developed a cloud migration plan combining financial reasoning (FinOps) with technical specifications for scalability and security. The plan connected the platform's technical requirements with the implications of running it in the cloud.
600+businesses using the Booked It platform
  • AWS and Heroku delivery knowledgePatrick W. credited our knowledge of AWS and Heroku with helping streamline his B2B SaaS platform and reduce its AWS costs by 30% or more. That result came from development and staff augmentation on the platform, experience we bring to assessing cloud choices.
30%+lower AWS costs than the platform's previous setup
  • Certified handling of what you show usunicrew holds information-security and quality-management certifications. For assessments and audits, we establish an NDA and agree access with your technical contact before work starts, giving the review a defined basis for handling the systems and information in scope.

Match the review to the decision

Use advisory to examine a technical choice. For continuing technical leadership, explore CTO as a service; for detailed requirements after choosing a direction, explore business analysis.

Talk it through

Define the question first

A discovery call helps establish which choice needs senior input and what evidence would make the answer useful. We can then scope a review around that question.

Talk it through

Worth a scoped second opinion

A second opinion can connect the options on paper with the codebase, data model and dependencies that implementation will encounter. Define those systems as the review's scope.

Book a discovery call

Scope the decision and its dependencies

Identify the systems and teams affected by the choice, then decide how much investigation and cost detail the recommendation needs. That gives the review a practical boundary.

Advisory, and settle who executes before you start

For a choice with substantial implementation consequences, agree who will assess and execute the recommendation. We can write the roadmap for your own team, another provider or a separately commissioned unicrew build.

Start with discovery

Our technology advice comes from engineers who deliver the kind of system they advise on. We write recommendations knowing our own team may be the one to build them. Each option comes with its trade-offs and cost drivers.

04Capabilities

What we advise on

We assess the technical choices that shape an investment, from architecture and platform fit to the team needed to deliver it.

  • Software architecture review

We examine application and database constraints, assess how the architecture can scale, and prioritize changes. For systems such as multi-factor authentication platforms, the review considers both application behavior and the data model.

  • Build versus buy analysis

    Build, buy, or rebuild

    Custom or off the shelf

We compare extending your current system, buying a product and building custom software against workflow fit, integration effort and cost drivers. The recommendation follows the business need and the viable options.

  • Cloud cost optimization audit

Use the fixed-scope audit when AWS or Azure costs and suitability for AI workloads are the question. We examine your cloud bill and architecture to identify priorities for the estate in scope.

  • AI readiness assessment

    AI readiness assessment

    Keep, rebuild or remove

Use the readiness assessment to decide which systems and data sources to keep, rebuild or remove. It ranks AI use cases by return against risk and produces a costed plan for the top one.

  • Security compliance assessment

Use a bounded readiness review to examine security and compliance requirements relevant to your buyers and procurement process, then prioritize the gaps to address.

  • Data architecture consulting

We assess data quality, access and integration dependencies against the proposed platform or feature. The recommendation identifies what the existing data architecture can support and what needs to change.

  • QA and delivery process audit

    Delivery and quality diagnosis

    Test strategy and coverage

We review test strategy, coverage and automation alongside the release process, then prioritize improvements. unicrew has ISTQB-certified QA engineers, bringing testing expertise to questions about delivery quality.

  • Engineering team model review

    Team and vendor model review

    Hire, extend or replace

We compare hiring, team extension and partner-led delivery against the roadmap, expertise needed and coordination your team can provide. We make the responsibilities of each model explicit.

What an advisory engagement hands over

Technology advisory gives you a written basis for choosing a direction and planning implementation. The deliverables remain yours whether your team, another provider or unicrew carries out the plan.

  • The optionsEach with its trade-offs and cost driversIncluding the failure mode we would expect from each, written down
  • A phased roadmapRecommended actions, sequence, and resourcingWritten to be executed by your team, another firm, or us
  • Yours either wayEvery deliverable, at every stageThe last stage is optional, and stopping at the roadmap is a legitimate end

06Stack

Technology stacks we assess

We assess the technology stack against your system's requirements, dependencies and operating costs. Existing languages, frameworks, APIs and cloud services are part of the decision.

07Engagement

How you engage us, and how you pay

Choose the engagement by the depth of the review and how often your technical owner needs outside input. We agree the scope and billing model before work begins.

  • One decision, scoped

    Bounded

We investigate one architecture, feasibility or build-versus-buy question using the system evidence relevant to it. The output sets out the options and our recommendation.

    Best when
One question is blocking a plan and you want it settled
    You pay
    Billed hourly, quoted per project
    Typical start
    Two to four weeks
  • Choose AI readiness, cloud cost and AI-readiness, or security and compliance readiness when the decision fits a packaged assessment. We agree its scope and quote before starting and return written findings.

    Best when
You want the number agreed before any work begins
    You pay
    Outcome based, quoted per project
    Typical start
    Two to four weeks
  • We provide architecture reviews and second opinions as your roadmap develops. Your technical owner retains the decisions; we agree the advisory responsibilities and involvement needed at each checkpoint.

    Best when
The estate is large and the decisions keep coming
    You pay
    Billed monthly, per team member
    Typical start
    Two to four weeks
A roadmap you already have

A second opinion on a plan you already have

We review an existing plan against relevant system evidence and document the choices, assumptions and sequence we would change. There is no minimum engagement period. You can commission implementation separately; for a project that needs delivery intervention, explore project rescue.

12Questions

About technology advisory

Technology advisory provides input for a defined decision, while a fractional CTO takes a continuing leadership mandate. Agree who supplies evidence and evaluates the recommendation before work begins.

A technology advisory engagement produces a written recommendation for a defined technical decision. We review the relevant systems and constraints with your business and technical owners, then investigate the viable options.

You receive:

  • Options with their trade-offs and cost drivers.
  • A recommended direction and the assumptions behind it.
  • A phased roadmap with the sequence and resources needed to act.

Your technical owner retains the decision, and you choose who implements the plan.

Bring in outside technical advice when another engineering perspective would help you evaluate a significant investment before committing to it.

Useful questions include choosing a stack, assessing whether an architecture can scale, testing feasibility against a budget, or comparing build, buy and rebuild options. Your internal owner may already have the expertise and evidence to decide; an advisory review helps when you want assumptions challenged or unfamiliar options assessed.

Yes. We scope technology due diligence around the technical questions that affect your investment or platform-selection decision.

The review can examine architecture, dependencies, maintainability, scalability and operating-cost drivers. We document the findings, assumptions and recommended actions for the systems in scope. It is a technical review, separate from legal or financial diligence and any certification of the investment.

Our guide explains why technical due diligence matters before an exit.

We quote technology advisory against the agreed scope. The main cost drivers are:

  • The number of systems and data sources reviewed.
  • The depth of code and architecture investigation.
  • Stakeholder involvement and the detail needed in the roadmap.

Billing follows the engagement model:

  • Time and materials: billed hourly, quoted per project.
  • Fixed price: outcome based, quoted per project.
  • Team extension: billed monthly per team member.

The AI readiness assessment and cloud cost and AI-readiness audit are packaged routes when their scope fits your question.

We agree an estimated duration after defining the question, systems and depth of investigation. A review of one architecture choice and a review across several systems require different amounts of work and stakeholder time.

Discovery, research and roadmap stages each have a defined output. Most engagements start within two to four weeks; we confirm the start date and review schedule for your scope before work begins.

We assess compatibility with the systems in scope before recommending a change. That means examining interfaces, data flows, dependencies and operating constraints with the people who know the estate.

For changes such as cloud migration and DevOps work, the roadmap needs to account for connected services such as CRM systems. We identify what can be retained, what needs adapting and which assumptions require further validation before implementation.

Compare relevant engineering experience, the recommendation you will receive and the responsibilities of the engagement.

  • Ask for delivery examples related to your architecture or platform question. Our cloud planning and AWS/Heroku work provide concrete examples.
  • Check whether the proposed output includes options, trade-offs, cost drivers and an implementation sequence. Those are the basis of our roadmap.
  • Agree who supplies evidence, evaluates the findings and owns implementation. Our advisory gives your technical owner senior outside input.

Assess security credentials and access arrangements alongside the technical fit.

Our delivery experience helps us assess implementation effort, dependencies and operating costs alongside the technical options. We can also be considered for follow-on development, so that commercial interest belongs in your evaluation of the advice.

We set out the options, trade-offs and cost drivers in writing. You retain the recommendation and choose whether your own team, another provider or unicrew implements it. Advisory and implementation are separately scoped decisions.

Advisory provides a recommendation for a defined decision; CTO as a Service provides continuing technical leadership under an agreed mandate.

Choose advisory when your technical owner will evaluate the options and direct implementation. Choose a fractional or interim CTO when you need someone to take agreed responsibility for technical direction and coordination over time. Your business retains its priorities and approval authority in either model.

Advisory evaluates the technical direction; business analysis defines the requirements and workflows needed to deliver it.

Advisory addresses architecture, stack, feasibility and cost drivers. Business analysis clarifies feature behavior, integration needs and acceptance criteria. When a project starts with a detailed client PRD, the direction may already be specified and requirements work becomes the next question. If both are open, we agree the order and scope of the two activities.
