Pet4Me

A comprehensive pet adoption and community marketplace, designed from the ground up to connect animal lovers, eliminate hidden fees, and support responsible pet ownership.

The Challenge

Pet4Me’s founder came to unicrew with a clear vision and deep domain expertise. As an experienced pet owner and breeder, he understood the market firsthand and had identified a core problem: existing pet platforms in the U.S. and UK were riddled with hidden fees, unclear pricing, and fragmented user experiences. Sellers would get halfway through listing a pet only to discover paywalled features. Buyers couldn’t trust what they were seeing.

His goal was ambitious: build a platform that combines a pet marketplace with a community hub, completely free to use, with no hidden costs at any step. The challenge for unicrew was threefold:

  • Multi-sided marketplace complexity. The platform had to serve distinct user types (pet owners, adoption centers, breeders, service providers) with different goals and workflows, all within a single coherent experience.
  • No existing design foundation. There was no brand identity, no design system, and no wireframes. Everything had to be built from scratch while staying true to the founder’s vision.
  • Trust as a product feature. In a market where users are skeptical of scams and bait-and-switch pricing, the design itself had to communicate safety, transparency, and legitimacy.

Finding a Design Vision

The founder brought deep domain expertise and a clear product vision. Our job was to shape it into something users could actually navigate, trust, and come back to.

Research & discovery. Before designing anything, we dug into the competitive landscape across U.S. and UK markets. The finding that shaped everything: hidden fees were the industry default, and users had learned not to trust pet platforms. The founder confirmed this from personal experience on both sides of the transaction. We mapped three core personas (Pet Lovers, Adoption Centers, Pet-related Businesses), built end-to-end user journeys for each, and used those insights to define a flexible information architecture that could support adoption, rehoming, lost-and-found, breeding, and services without overwhelming anyone.

Design & identity. The founder created the logo and chose the color palette. Our role was turning personal vision into a scalable system. We worked through rapid wireframe iterations as a conversation tool, testing layouts and interaction logic before committing to a visual direction. The result was a comprehensive UI kit (typography, color tokens, components, interaction states) that balanced emotional warmth with marketplace trust, and gave engineering an exact blueprint to build from.

Responsive execution. Every screen was designed and built across mobile, tablet, and desktop breakpoints, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of how users reach the platform.

Tech Stack & Architecture

We designed the platform around a Laravel backend and a Vue/Nuxt frontend to support a scalable, SEO-friendly marketplace with reliable backend workflows and a maintainable product architecture.

  • Laravel was used as the backend foundation for marketplace business logic, API development, authentication, validation, and third-party integrations.

  • Vue, Nuxt, TypeScript, Pinia, and Axios were selected for the frontend to deliver a fast, structured, and SEO-friendly user experience, while keeping the codebase predictable and easier to scale as new features were added.

  • MySQL on AWS RDS provides a reliable managed database layer for core marketplace data, including users, listings, messages, services, and related transactions.

  • Redis, queues, and scheduled jobs support performance optimization and background processing, including caching, asynchronous tasks, notifications, and recurring platform operations.

  • AWS-managed infrastructure was used for deployment, database hosting, environment provisioning, and scalable application operations.

Core Features

The platform launched with four feature layers:

  • Listings – the core of the marketplace. Users can post and browse pet adoption and rehoming listings, breeding and stud announcements, lost and found reports, and a directory of local pet services (grooming, veterinary care, walking, and more). Each listing type uses a structured profile format tailored to its use case, and every listing is completely free to create, feature, and respond to.
  • Communication – built for safety, not just convenience. In-app messaging lets users coordinate directly without sharing personal contact details upfront. Saved posts let users bookmark listings and return to them later.
  • Trust & safety – because a free marketplace attracts bad actors. Verified badges distinguish trusted shelters and breeders, automated content safety filters screen photos, videos, and messages, and a one-tap reporting system is backed by anti-scam monitoring.
  • Pet profiles – beyond the transaction. Each pet gets a persistent profile for tracking vaccinations, vet visits, and grooming history, turning a one-time listing into an ongoing relationship with the platform.
